Using Twitter As A Marketing Tool

by admin on December 22, 2009

Using Twitter as a marketing tool needs to be done with moderation. You don’t want to be considered a spammer on Twitter because you only link to your website and clutter your Twitter stream with ads. On Twitter, you must also form connections. Be friendly, ask questions, share information and retweet for others.

Form connections – Besides following people who are in your industry, follow people who have conversations. Reach out to newcomers on Twitter to teach them the ropes. Help them gain a following. Retweet for others.

Be Friendly – Get to know the people behind their Twitter avatar. Learn about their likes and dislikes.  Take part in Follow Friday and other activities like Twibbons.

Ask questions -  Talk every day topics. It’s best to avoid controversial topics but some Twitter marketers make a name for themselves for being controversial. Find the common ground that is best for your company, product, brand or blog.

Share Information – When you learn about something that will benefit your followers or other people on Twitter, tweet about it. Keep informed about Twitter updates by following the Twitter Status blog. Provide news that you are sure is true. Don’t jump on the bandwagon and spread rumors.

When you have accomplished these steps on Twitter, you can then use Twitter as a Marketing Tool. Consider percentages of conversational tweets to marketing tweets. Be sure that your Twitter persona is seen as someone who is helpful and considerate. Use your Twitter bio to provide information about what you are marketing with a link to your website or blog.
